Menstrual tensions a special defence to criminal acts?

The Times obituary on June 2nd 2015 for Lord Griffiths, who died aged 91 on May 30, 2015 includes: “Following his appointment in 1980 to the Court of Appeal, he gave the leading judgement against a plea that menstrual tensions could provide a special defence to criminal acts”.

No doubt this is correct in law, but there must be many women suffering badly from menstruation or menopause who have come close to doing something desperate.
