Male sex hormones to help beat breast cancer

US scientists have found a new target to beat breast cancer – male sex hormones, or androgens.

They have discovered that many breast cancers have androgen receptors on their surface, and that male hormones like testosterone fuel the tumour’s growth.

Using drugs to block the androgen receptors could offer another way to fight breast cancer.

Clinical trials are planned to test this.
